No idea here. He's done, and doesn't realize it/can't admit it? Time to retire. Take up hobbies.

Maybe his heart is no longer in it but he feels he owes it to us (to Phil?) to keep on going. I can see how easily the weight of expectation associated with being a custodian of the Grateful Dead legacy could become stifling. Only Phil seems to have found a way of wholly embracing the past by finding ways of reinterpreting it for the future.

Sure, plus he's got to bear the weight of all the fans' resentment of him for still being alive while Jerry's not.

I resent Chapman's aim for hitting John instead of Yoko. That makes a hell of a lot more sense than resenting Bob for living.

I was at last night's show and took the opportunity to take a bathroom break during Hells Asshole. It's now between sets of night 2 at MSG and the first set's Eyes and Viola Lee smoked.

The 2nd set WR Prelude-Part 1-Time-Let it Grow was da bomb.

El Paso.

If you've ever been there in the middle of summer you'd know why.

Who the hell resents Bobby for living?

I just don't care to hear what he has to offer within the confines of furthur. I don't want to pay money to see any band where I have to temper my expectations.

Just my armchair psychoanalysis, but I think it's a factor.

Well, you don't have to see them; but really after the grateful dead, my expectations of just about anyone else are tempered.

Go see new or still vital live music. In the past few months I've seen great shows by Faith No More, Arcade Fire, Cold War Kids, Band of Horses, Tom Petty, drivin n cryin, and next monday I'll go see Grinderman. There's plenty of great music still being made and a lot of stuff I've yet to catch or even heard of - just gotta poke around. I've given Furthur a try but it just doesn't move me. And while I understand why people enjoy DSO, again, it doesn't move me to hear a "band" recreate another band's music. Make it new and make it your own or why bother? Thus, I'm really, really curious to see Billy K with Papa Mali and George Porter, Jr. To me, that's truly further....

Sure, I take your point, we were really just analyzing why maybe Bob is having "issues" and those were possible factors (weight of fans' expectations taking a toll).

Understood. And by the way, I really appreciate Bob and what he brought (and I guess still brings on occasion) to the band. Hell, I'm one of the few that really likes Black Throated Wind (and even admit to liking Brother Esau as one of the latter day songs).

Micah - have fun at 7 Walkers. Give a report. They were at Moe's in Santa Cruz right around Halloween, but it was a "school night" and I just don't bounce back like I used to for the work day and I've never been good at moderation when I go out to a show. Too much of everything...

I'm a weir guy too. It's funny how the guy gets crapped on but was actually the one who was the force behind the GD in later years when garcia went off to La La land. Weir is actually high in the mix and almost lead on a lot of nights in 94 and 95. And yes the axe pick sound is bad and not having Jer stand out sucked but the guy really did pick up the slack for the band. I think this cancels out the fact he had ball hanger shorts and climbed the speaker tower at a show

lob - For my ears Bob's guitar playing evolved and become very interesting in the '80's & 90's . It wasn't the golden tones of '72 , but it fit sometimes that his guitar would sound like sheets of metal . And I like when he steps out to lead , like he did a ton in '87 , '94 , '95 ; and on many other happier times during GD's life . I like Healy's work , but my most serious complaint is his under mixing of Bob , for years .
As far as anything to do visually with Bob ......

I agree. I think his sound in the late 80's is awesome. For me I like comparing a great deal with the GD and a great deal with JGB. I think Bob really makes that tune work. Not that there aren't awesome versions with the Jerry band but something is missing for me and it's Weir. Not to mention...I love the diversity of songs in a GD concert. I like his tunes as much as I like Garcia's.

Where are you seeing 7 Walkers? I'm going to see them in Bayshore in Dec.

Where is Deep Bannana Blackout playing? I used to see them at a tiny place called da Funky Fish in Bayshore - they really are fun.

Is the problem El Paso? I recall some months ago seeing a video of a horrible butchering of EP. It's got a different (if pretty common) 3/4 time signature -- maybe he just loses the count.
